"The Carter Farm Band" is a gang of happy DC-area musicians who have taken upon themselves the mission of playing and singing what the late, great Gram Parsons dubbed "Cosmic American Music" to anyone willing to listen. From whence come the Carter Farm Boys remains a mystery. They were discovered by folk music anthropologist Rodney Pinkwater in the misty hills and hollers of the remote Hybla Valley in deep South Alexandria. Jethro and JG Carter (the given name of the latter is reportedly Jehosephat Gary) honed their style in basements and open mic nights and have become widely known as “those two guys who showed up that one time.”The two were raised in a simple shack by the banks of Little Hunting Creek, where George Washington would go with a gun and a case of beer and get little hunting done. Back in the day, the area had no running water, electricity, or high speed internet. On their infrequent trips to the nearby strip mall settlement of Gum Springs they were exposed to the music of Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and ELO. Late into the night they would sit on the pickup truck bench seat that served as porch furniture and pluck at rubber bands and bang on empty beer kegs. Eventually they migrated toward the sounds of classic honky-tonk and early country rock. Guiding lights of the music include the late, great Gram Parsons, Buck Owens and Johnny Cash's Sun work. And if the trail leads to Hazzard County or Cheap Trick, so much the better....
